Honest Bottom

At some ration stalls, a vessel offered for trade must be shown upside down before pricing; a raised or false bottom is called a liar’s floor and the quantity, not the silhouette, sets the mark.

Panel 1

A vendor displays two identical-looking grain tins beneath the same painted price.

Caption: The new tin cost exactly what the old tin cost.

VENDOR: Stability.

Panel 2

A resident pours both tins into bowls; the new tin leaves a much smaller mound.

Caption: The tin had learned to keep a secret.

RESIDENT: Where did supper go?

Panel 3

A market measurer flips the new tin upside down, revealing a deep false bottom, then rings a handbell.

MEASURER: Liar’s floor. Price the grain, not the shadow.

Panel 4

Every stall now presents containers upside down beside standard bowls; a handle-out cup hangs at a water stall.

Caption: By evening, every bottom had to face the sky.

VENDOR: Stability was shorter than advertised.
