Dead Five

In 2230 Washington pump crews may call a dead five by laying a wrench across a shift-counter's glass eye. For five unscored minutes, every hand stops so the crew can listen, inspect, and think before touching the machinery. Interfering with a dead five is treated as recklessness, not idleness.

Panel 1 — A marvelous score

Inside a patched neighborhood pump room, a brass shift-counter watches a crew through one round glass eye. Its needle falls while a mechanic kneels motionless with one ear near a pipe. A tally clerk points anxiously at the gauge.

CAPTION: The new counter measured every hand that moved.

CLERK: Shift score is falling.

MECHANIC: So is the pressure.

Panel 2 — Productive motion

Workers hurry theatrically: one pumps a disconnected lever, another carries the same crate in a circle, and a third rattles a rack of tools. The counter's needle swings high and its little bell rings. The main pipe shudders harder.

CLERK: That's better.

SFX: DING!

Panel 3 — Dead five

The mechanic lays a heavy wrench horizontally across the counter's glass eye. Every worker freezes. In the sudden quiet, the mechanic listens to the pipe and another worker notices a hairline crack vibrating at a coupling.

MECHANIC: Dead five.

CLERK: Counter marks us idle.

WORKER: Let it rest. It looks tired.

Panel 4 — What survived

Five minutes later, the repaired coupling holds and water runs cleanly into a neighborhood cistern. The counter prints a long blank strip. A handle-out cup hangs nearby, and the repair notice bears three witness knots.

CAPTION: The counter lost five minutes.

CAPTION: The pump kept tomorrow.
