Panel 1 — A few words
Commons clinic, June 21, 2230. A long wooden waiting bench obstructs the doorway. An anonymous clerk offers a blank quotation card toward Harlan, who remains outside the frame. Carla is also outside the frame.
CLERK: Tell us how it feels to be heard.
HARLAN: The bench is blocking the door.
Panel 2 — Wall space
A decorative frame and blank card rest on the obstructing bench. The doorway behind it is still cramped.
CLERK: We meant a sentence for the wall.
HARLAN: Try the bench.
Panel 3 — Before
A clinic waiting-space sketch is brought to a low side table. A pencil lies across it. The plan shows the bench moving away from the doorway and against a side wall; the quotation card has been set aside. Carla speaks from outside the frame.
CARLA: Next layout comes to you before we move anything.
HARLAN: With a pencil.
Panel 4 — Not finished
The bench now stands along the wall, leaving the doorway clear. The clerk still has the blank quotation card. The sketch and pencil remain within Harlan's reach, beyond the left edge. Neither Harlan nor Carla is depicted.
CLERK: I'll put you down as consulted.
HARLAN: Leave the pencil. I'm not finished.
