Panel 1 — The precaution
Commons blanket desk, June 27, 2230, daytime. An unnamed adult borrower holds a small optical reading aid toward their own blanket-return slip. The clerk pauses them. Carla speaks entirely off frame throughout.
CLERK: No lenses at this desk.
BORROWER: It reads the words I can't.
Panel 2 — The background
The slip is on the counter. From the reader's angle, waiting people are behind it. No recording or breach is established.
CLERK: I don't want the queue in a recording.
BORROWER: Neither do I. I want the address.
Panel 3 — The height of help
A small, opaque, three-sided folding screen is placed behind the slip on the counter. The borrower is sitting; the counter is too high for comfortable use.
CARLA: Put your slip against this.
BORROWER: Lower. I use it sitting down.
Panel 4 — The adjustment
The screen moves to an existing low side table, with the borrower's own slip clipped inside. From the seated reading position its opaque back and sides exclude the queue. The borrower keeps control of the aid.
CARLA: Here?
BORROWER: Yes. Keep the stand here. I'll need it again.
Panel 5 — The useful part
The borrower aims the aid into the screen and hears the return destination. The slip carries the established blanket number and desk address, not a sleeping place. No new inventory number is introduced.
READER: Return to: Commons blanket desk.
CLERK: All that for our address?
BORROWER: Now I can check it myself.
Panel 6 — Company
The low reading stand remains beside the counter. The borrower keeps the slip and aid, with a folded blanket on their lap. No blanket return or new bed allocation is shown.
CLERK: Shall I read it for you next time?
BORROWER: You can say hello.
